Could you grow $500,000 into $3,000,000 within a month? Establishing a fund that’s sole purpose was to assist struggling small businesses amongst the pandemic? Dave Portnoy has helped 168 businesses with the “Barstool Fund” that he started by putting up his own money. Since he started his small company two decades ago, Portnoy understands how crucial the first years of a small business are. He is the founder and CEO of Barstool Sports, a digital media company that produces sports-focused content.

Portnoy took to social media to advocate for others to donate as well. As the site’s tracker shows at the moment, 200,976 supporters have contributed to the small business fund. When the fund surpassed 2 million dollars, Portnoy pushed forward via his Twitter, “we still have a line of small businesses out the ass that need help and need help now. We need another 20 million.” Celebrities such as Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers, and Guy Fieri are among those who have made substantial contributions to the fund.

Though the sports media CEO is known to voice his political views, he explains, “I don’t care if you’re political or not political. Everyone should care about this.” Making light on the fact that many news outlets have chosen to promote other donation operations than the Barstool Fund.

Via his Twitter account, Dave Portnoy posts owners’ heartfelt reactions via Facetime, informing them that they would be receiving financial support. The only condition is that they continue paying their employees throughout the pandemic. Watching instant relief wash over their faces when hearing the news is one of the most significant driving factors of the fund’s success. Everyone can relate to the burden of not knowing if one could make ends meet.

Regardless of how you feel about Dave Portnoy, he uses the resources available to him to make a difference for those who are struggling.
